Approximately 40 members with friends and family came
together at the New Forest for the Club's New Forest Weekend. It was
the first major social event in 2002 for the Fiat Motor Club (GB) and it took place from
Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th February.
Most
members stayed at the Lyndhurst
Park Hotel where the Club had organised a special weekend deal
inclusive of meals and the social dinner & dance on Saturday night.
Some members made their own arrangements
for accommodation and of course local members simply joined in
the daily and evening activities.
The
weekend activities started midday on Friday with a visit to Buckler's
Hard Historic Village. The small village of Buckler's
Hard was built in the early 18th century and between 1745 and 1847 became a
major shipbuilding centre, supplying Admiral Lord Nelson's British fleet with
over 50 ships. Today, just two
rows of sleepy cottages slope down to the glorious River Beaulieu. A number of
these have been restored to show life during the 18th century and visitors may
now see the New Inn pub, the Labourer's Cottage, the Shipwright's Cottage and
Henry Adams's Room. In addition there is a maritime museum, with many fine
models and naval memorabilia. The Master Builder's House Hotel, occupying one
of the 18th-century cottages on the bank of the river, proved to be a
delightful spot for refreshments.
After the necessary hotel check-in,
the rest of Friday afternoon was free time used by most members to do a spot
of shopping or just to explore the area.
The Saturday morning started with "The New
Forest Run" a drive of about 50 miles
in and around the New Forest. The afternoon on Saturday was once again 'free'
time which was used by members for further exploration of the surrounding
areas or for even more shopping.
The main social event, the dinner and dance, took
place on Saturday evening when the prizes were also awarded to the
winners of the New Forest Run.
There was an early morning start on Sunday as we all
had to arrive together for the visit to the Beaulieu Motor Museum where we also had the concours
competition in the reserved parking allocated by the Museum to the Fiat Motor
Club (GB).
More photographs of the New Forest Weekend can be
seen in the event's Photo Gallery.
