The
Lake District weekend was a superb event organised by Chris Fairbank
(with a little help from Tracy) and took place over the weekend of 21st
and 22nd September 2002. Thirty people were booked for the event and
most of us met at the Little Chef outside Penrith at the North of the
Lake District. From there a short drive took us to our lunch stop where
we were met by some more members.
Lunch
was followed by a spectacular drive around Crummock Water, Buttermere
and Borrowdale taking in the Honister, Whinlater and Kirkstone passes.
We arrived at the
Rockside and
The Cottage guest Houses in
Windermere
late in the afternoon for a short rest before the evening activities. An
Italian feast dinner at a local restaurant was followed by a night of
dancing at a night club for the more energetic (and younger)
members.
After
breakfast on Sunday we had an even more spectacular drive around the
Langdales, Wast Water and the Duddon Valley. The notorious (and narrow)
Wrynose and Hardnott passes with their 30% gradients and multitude of
bends were an excellent test for the cars and their drivers all of whom
passed with flying colours (of course).
Taking
a short break from motoring we boarded the Ravenglass &
Eskdale Railway for a most beautiful train journey to our lunch stop at
the Ratty Arms, the Railway's own pub at Ravenglass. After lunch and our
return train journey we had another drive for a further dose of the
spectacular scenery before returning to Ambleside for our farewells and
begin our journeys back home.
This
outstanding event had all the right ingredients to ensure that an
excellent time was had by all: fantastic drives with breathtaking
scenery enjoyed by the drivers and their passengers, good
food and excellent company. The fact that the weather was also
good to us was an added bonus. Our sincere thanks go to Chris
Fairbank and Tracy for the exceptional organisation of the event.
